Pregnancy massage feels absolutely incredible!
I remember receiving massage while I was pregnant. I never wanted it to end! My back hurt, my hips felt tight, and my legs felt resentful for the demands of lugging all the extra weight around. And I just couldn't get comfortable. The first time I got a massage while pregnant, I felt as if I had died and gone to heaven. I had massaged plenty of pregnant women in my practice, but it wasn't until I was pregnant myself that I could appreciate just how wonderful it felt to receive massage while pregnant. I wanted to take my massage therapist home with me!
Carrying a baby inside of you changes your center of gravity, putting stress on your back, neck, shoulders and abdominal muscles. It also relaxes your pelvic ligaments which can cause your pelvic joints to become less stable. Often, your pelvis is pulled forward which can effect your posture and contribute to low back or sciatic pain.
During your massage you will be primarily on your sides, propped up and supported by lots of pillows. If you can tolerate lying on your back, we will finish the session face-up. Care will be taken to avoid pressure points in your ankles that should not be touched with direct, prolonged pressure during pregnancy.
Studies indicated that massage during pregnancy can:
1) Reduce back and joint pain.
2) Reduce edema and swelling.
3) Promote better and more restorative sleep.
4) Lessen anxiety.
5) Decrease stress hormones.
